We generally ride the section from Ansonia to Blackwell in spring and in the fall. The trail itself is finely crushed limestone, well packed and in excellent shape. It must be breathtaking in the Fall. Melting glaciers carved the gorge, which runs 8001,400 feet deep and a mile wide. Most of the trail runs right along the creek. Biking on from Darling Run, the mountains quickly climb higher and higher until you are soon deep into the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. There are several gates on the trail to ride around, but the trail itself is so impressive that the gates did not deter from a great scenic ride. I saw four; I could see them perched in the sycamore trees catching the early morning sun as they watched the PC for fish. There are also several villages along the way and general stores where food and water is available. The trail goes along Pine Creek through Pennsylvania mountains and cornfields - a very pleasant, scenic experience. All water is routed under the trail. Opened in 1996 and completed 11 years later, the Pine Creek Rail Trail runs on the abandoned and almost perfectly level roadbed of the former New York Central line to Lyons, NYwhich explains the "L" on mileposts that still stand sentry along much of the route. If I can believe the warnings along the trail, the timber rattler is rather docile and will not attack unless provoked. At the very end of the trail is Pag-Omar where sandwiches drinks and ice cream is available. This trail is 2 miles straight down to the creek, and then you can cross the creek like I did if it is shallow enough at the time and then 2 miles back up the other side of the canyon! Lots of theses markers along this stretch. I recently moved to PA and wanted to ride this trail that I have heard so much about. We too rode the trail from Ansonia to Jersey Shore in two days over Memorial Day and loved it! They have the best blueberries we ever tasted!! The staff is friendly and there is 150 years of history (and antiques) plus a purportedly haunted room (14). It just seems like so many people when on these rail-trails act as if they are the only ones on it. Along the way, there are several communities with places to stay or to grab a bite to eat. The first attempt was to build the rail line through this region. The rural scenery is gorgeous and the trail is well-maintained with very little change in grade. The only negative that I have found is that groups don't seem to follow bike etiquette.
